Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in the hair follicle with concentrated light energy. The heat generated damages the follicle’s ability to produce hair, reducing growth progressively across a series of sessions. Unlike shaving or waxing, which address hair at the surface, laser treats the source — the follicle itself — making results long-lasting and in many cases permanent after a complete treatment course.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Hair grows in cycles: active growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and resting (telogen). Laser hair removal is only effective during the anagen phase, when the hair contains enough active melanin for the laser to target. Because not all hairs are in the same phase simultaneously, multiple sessions are required to catch each follicle during its active phase. Most treatment areas require six to eight sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart. After completing a full course, the majority of clients achieve 70–90% permanent hair reduction, with occasional maintenance sessions required once or twice annually for any regrowth.

Skin Type Compatibility

Earlier laser technology was primarily effective on light skin with dark hair — the contrast maximized the laser’s ability to target the follicle without affecting surrounding tissue. Modern systems, including Nd:YAG lasers, extend safe and effective treatment to a much broader range of skin tones, including deeper complexions. A thorough consultation before your first session is essential. We assess your Fitzpatrick skin type, hair color, and hair thickness to determine the appropriate laser system, wavelength, and settings. Never begin laser hair removal without this evaluation — the wrong settings on darker skin tones can cause burns and hyperpigmentation.

Treatment Areas

We offer laser hair removal for the face (upper lip, chin, full face, sideburns), underarms, arms, legs (lower, upper, full), bikini and Brazilian area, back, chest, and stomach. Each area has different session requirements and pricing. Smaller areas like the upper lip may require only four to six sessions. Larger areas like the full leg or back typically require eight to ten.

Preparing for Treatment

Shave the treatment area the day before your appointment — the laser needs the hair follicle present under the skin, but surface hair absorbs energy that should reach the follicle. Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams for at least four weeks before laser treatment, as these remove the follicle that the laser needs to target. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner on the treatment area for two weeks before and after sessions. Do not use retinol or glycolic acid products on the area for three days before treatment.

Laser vs. Waxing in NYC: Which Is Right for You?

Both laser hair removal and waxing reduce unwanted body hair, but they operate on completely different timelines and commitments. Waxing removes hair temporarily — typically providing three to six weeks of smooth skin before regrowth. Laser hair removal targets the hair follicle itself, reducing hair growth over a series of sessions to the point where many clients require no regular maintenance for years.

The choice comes down to a few variables. Budget over time: waxing costs are recurring indefinitely, while laser requires a larger upfront investment that pays off over two to five years. Skin and hair type: laser works best on clients with darker hair and lighter skin because the laser targets melanin; advances in technology have expanded the range of treatable skin tones, but a consultation is essential to confirm candidacy. Pain threshold: most clients find laser hair removal less uncomfortable than waxing, particularly for sensitive areas.

For someone who waxes the same areas monthly, laser hair removal becomes financially neutral within three to four years — and after that, it represents pure savings. The more meaningful benefit for most clients is the freedom from scheduling. Waxing requires regular appointments and a degree of hair growth between sessions. Laser, once the treatment course is complete, simply removes the need for both. At Candy Spa, we offer both services so you can transition at your own pace or use them in combination depending on the area being treated.
